Final encore session: What is Hospice and Palliative Care
With Sharon Ziff, RN and Dr. Andrew Wagner.
Hospice and Palliative Care focus on quality of life, providing a compassionate, holistic approach to patients with life-limiting illnesses. A team approach for symptom management emphasizes pain management, comfort, emotional well-being, and caregiver needs. Providing management of long-term illnesses, palliative care facilitates an inquiry into who you are, what is important to you, and what you need to know about your current circumstances so that a care plan can be created that is consistent with your values. Hospice is part of the continuum of Palliative Care for those people who have approximately 6 months life expectancy. This workshop will address the following about Palliative and Hospice Care:
How do they fit into today’s healthcare system?
When is it time for Palliative or Hospice Care?
What is their philosophy, team, and services?
Sharon Ziff, RN retired after 12 years working at Memorial Hospice. As a Hospice Nurse, she was drawn to learn more about how we, as a society and as individuals, have treated aging, illness and death. She has dedicated herself to breaking the taboo of speaking about death and to helping her community gain the knowledge to best prepare themselves and their families for a good final chapter and a death with dignity.
