Jews under Islam in Medieval Spain: Poetry, Pragmatism and Politics
Described as the “Golden Age” of medieval Spanish Jewry, Rabbi/Dr. Leila Gal Berner will explore how “golden” it was through a presentation of the poetry of the Jews, the special political situation of the Jews under their Muslim rulers and how they navigated all of this in a pragmatic and clever way.
Rabbi Dr. Leila Gal Berner is a scholar of medieval Jewish history. She is an ordinee of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and was also given smicha by Reb Zalman. She is a teacher of Reb Irwin’s and is the author of the Miriam Hanaviah verse that we sing with Eliyahu Hanavi, as well as the new book, Listening to the Heart of Genesis: A Contemplative Path.
