A five-week book study and meditation group focused on Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism from the Inside Out, by Ruth King.
Tuesdays: October 6 through November 3
Facilitated by Amy Schiff, via Zoom
On October 13, we will be discussing Chapters 4-8 (pages 45-103)
Amy says: This book has been an invaluable resource to me: eye-opening, challenging, and practical. King posits that racism is a heart disease "and it's curable." Her book breaks it down into three sections: (1) understanding habits of harm (=diagnosis); (2) mindfulness (= heart surgery); and (3) cultivating a culture of care (=recovery). She is quick to say that her book is not an attempt to resolve the racial injustice that pervades society...[but offer] a framework for understanding racism and our role in it, as well as mindful strategies that reduce mental distress and increase clarity, stability, and well-being.
Amy continues: Because I always need to read, watch, and listen to things more than once (and usually more than that) to fully understand them, and I find that I learn more and cultivate new understandings and perspectives when I am in community, I would like to offer space and facilitation for a book study and meditation practice.
The Plan:
For those who would like, we will read the book on our own and break it down into five readings.
We will come together to share thoughts, insights, and perspectives each week following the section of the book we read.
We will follow that with a meditation practice (from the book)
